Raingutter Course Layout:

  1. The course consists of two ten-foot raingutters with endcaps. The raingutters are set up and leveled on a table, placed side-by-side, and filled with water.
  2. The boat is raced by "blowing" the boat down the raingutter by using a straw and his own lung-power.
  3. The pack will supply each scout with a straw.
  4. Any unsportsmanlike conduct by the scout (or parent) will be grounds for immediate disqualification.
  5. All scouts will get Raingutter Regatta participation ribbons. 1st-3rd place in each bracket will get a "place" ribbon. 1st place finishers will advance to the pack finals. All four finalists will receive a trophy. A scout must race in the finals to claim a trophy. If a scout wins his bracket, and does not show up to the finals, the trophy will be awarded to the 2nd place finisher from that bracket.
  6. Additionally, the pack awards 3 "design" trophies. The usual categories are: Cubbiest (Most keeping with a Cub Scout theme), Most Patriotic, and Most Original. This year the pack will also award rank level design trophies. That means that there will be a total of 15 design trophies this year!

The Boat:

  1. The boat must be newly built for the current Cub Scouting year. The boat should be substantially built by the Scout. Parental supervision in the construction of the boat is encouraged. The boat must be assembled from the B.S.A. Raingutter Regatta Kit parts only. Additional decals, paint, and glue are permitted. The pack will supply one raingutter kit per scout. If that kit is lost or broken, the scout will need to furnish its replacement.
  2. Overall width shall not exceed 1.875 inches.
  3. Overall length from bow to stern (including rudder) shall not exceed 7.00 inches, nor shorter than 6.50 inches.
  4. The mast can be no taller than 6.50 inches from the deck surface.
  5. The boat must have a single hull (All catamaran-type boats will be disqualified).
  6. The sail must be the one supplied with the B.S.A. Raingutter Regatta Kit. The sail may be trimmed down and shaped, but may not be larger than the material supplied.
  7. The keel and rudder may be glued anywhere on the bottom of the boat, but cannot exceed 7.00 inches in overall length
  8. Details such as decals and paint are permissible as long as these details are securely glued or fastened to the boat. The scouts are encouraged to decorate their boat, as they will also be judged for design, and awards given to the top boats as detailed above.
  9. Once boats are checked in, they cannot be modified in any way. If something breaks, falls off, or comes unglued from the boat, the boat cannot be fixed.

The Race:

  1. Raingutter Regatta is a double-elimination match race.
  2. The race is divided into four brackets, plus the Pack Finals. The four brackets are: Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and Webelos (Webelos I and II race together). The first place winner of each bracket will advance to the pack finals. If the first place finisher cannot attend the pack finals, the 2nd place finisher for that bracket will take his place.
  3. Scouts must be present to race their own boats. A scout who is not present to race a heat when his name is called automatically loses that heat. This will, of course, flip him to the loser's bracket, but does not automatically eliminate him from the bracket. If that is his first loss, he can still show up for his next heat and race.
  4. Once a race is started, the boat may not be touched except by a judge. At the discretion of the judges, any scout who repeatedly touches his own boat during a race will be disqualified.
  5. A heat will consist of two or three races. The winner of the heat will be the first scout to win two races. For the first two races, each scout will race once in each gutter. If at the end of those two races, each scout has won once, a coin will be flipped to determine lane assignments for the third and deciding race.
  6. A scout must lose two heats to be eliminated from the bracket.
  7. Each track will have two judges. For a race to be official, both judges must agree on the winner. If there is no agreement, then the race will be re-ran (even if the outcome is that one Judge thinks Scout A won, and the other judge isn't sure who won...there isn't agreement, so that race is re-ran).
  8. A boat that has tipped over, is caught up on the raingutter, or has its sail spun around cannot be "righted" as long as that boat is in the lead. The boat can only be righted by the judge, and will only be righted the instant the other boat takes the lead.
